Would you like to share your story?
The Purple Fig publishes honest, compelling personal essays. If you are not a trained literary goddess, that’s okay, we want to hear from you anyway. We want all ages because the journey has many different stages. Raw, relatable stories that cover everything from looking for love to staying in love; from partying to parenting; from personal creativity to professional success. The journey of a woman is not an uncomplicated one. We want pieces full of honesty, humility and humour. If one can admit something that is difficult to say, another will feel inspired to do the same.
We welcome gutsy, edgy writers who aren’t afraid to admit when they’ve been wrong. These women write about the challenges of aging, youth, facing adversity, motherhood, dating, and all the other fun passions in our lives such as cooking, wine, fashion and design.
These stories should illustrate the lessons learned along the way. The whole “Look at me juggling my job, my husband, my kids and I look good too!” blabber is NOT what we’re looking for.
The idea of The Purple Fig is to create a community for women to share stories and relate without the filters of ego and self-consciousness. By doing this together, we can produce a more authentic portrayal of the journey of a woman and in turn evolve stronger and more successful. So, if you think you can give us an honest, well-written piece, we want to read your story.
Currently we are only accepting personal story drafts and short fiction for our Summer Reading Series.
Personal Stories (Truth)
In order for us to know what your writing style is and to know if we want to publish you we need to read the story. If you submit a pitch with just the gist of your story, or a rough idea, you will probably not hear back from us. Please submit a draft of your personal story for consideration (800-1000 words). Please write a story with a beginning, middle and end. We want to get lost in a scene and swept up by the friends, men, co-workers and anyone else who make up your reality. Please do not send pieces that just describe someone in your life or describe how you feel about something general. SHOW US your world through a well-told story.
Summer Reading Series (Short Fiction)
We are looking for compelling short fiction (1500 2000 words) to expose our audience to something a little different this summer. We want our readers to escape the everyday and find themselves wrapped up in quality stories with interesting characters and riveting, relatable themes. We want stories about the emotional journey of a woman that can (doesn’t have to) include sex/romance, suspense, mystery, humour. We always welcome stories that highlight friendships and relationships within families and partnerships. Please submit finished work only.
Remember, TPF publishes only original content, so please do not submit anything that has been previously published online or elsewhere.
PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT PIECES UNDER 800-1000 WORDS FOR PERSONAL STORIES AND 1500-2000 FOR SHORT FICTION. SPECIFY WHICH HEADING YOU ARE SUBMITTING UNDER.
INDICATE WHICH SECTION YOU ARE SUBMITTING TO (FICTION OR NON-FICTION) AND PLEASE LIST WORD COUNT AT THE TOP
